Prof. Chiedozie N Egesi
President NPBA
The Nigeria Plant Breeders Association (NPBA) is the umbrella body of Plant Breeders in Nigeria, with members spread through all plant-based Agricultural Research Institutes (Nigerian and International), Universities, Seed Companies and related Establishments in Nigeria and the diaspora.
Members of NPBA are involved in the development of improved varieties (of field crops, vegetables, and tree crops), for optimum performance in stress (biotic and abiotic) and non-stress environments, and the development of other associated technologies that have potentials to remarkably improve the current yields of major and underexploited crops in Nigeria.
The Association is involved in advocacy for better funding for plant breeding research and, through her engagement with Universities and other tertiary Institutions, aims to improve plant breeding curriculum and education in the Country. The NPBA, in times past, has organized workshops to address important issues in plant breeding and will continue to use such workshops to provide training to her members.
The Association is poised to forge strong research collaborations among her members, aimed at driving improved genetic gains. Mentoring of young Plant Breeders is an important goal of the Association.
The NPBA parades leaders of plant breeding research in Nigeria, among who are Director-Generals/Executive Directors/CEOs of Research Institutes and globally recognized award-winning scientists. The NPBA is the affiliate of the African Plant Breeders Association (APBA) in Nigeria.
